Side hustles for 20 hours a week: real numbers

By the Mundyo team · November 4, 2026 · 4 min read · amounts as of November 2, 2026 · How we work

Put 20 hours a week into AI subtitles and transcription and Mundyo estimates about $2,010 a month in the US after 12 months, from a $335 start. Put the same hours into WhatsApp reselling and the estimate drops to $1,120, so the idea you pick matters as much as the time you give it.

Twenty hours a week is a real constraint. It is two evenings and a weekend day after a full job, or four school-hour mornings. Most "side hustle" lists ignore that and quietly assume you can work 40.

We filtered the Mundyo catalogue for ideas that need 20 hours a week or less. In each of the United States, the United Kingdom, Nigeria and India, 15 ideas pass the filter. Here are the ones we would look at first, with the numbers as Mundyo estimates them for month 12, once you have regular clients or customers. Month 1 will look much worse.

The numbers side by side

Net income per month at month 12, all at 20 hours a week:

IdeaUSUKNigeriaIndia
AI subtitles and transcription$2,010£1,420452,000 NGN47,700 INR
Property photos and listings$1,900£1,330452,000 NGN47,700 INR
Second-hand resale online$1,790£1,170452,000 NGN42,400 INR
WhatsApp reselling, no stock$1,120£792301,000 NGN26,500 INR

Look at the start costs too, because they change the picture. AI subtitles needs $335 in the US and £208 in the UK. In Nigeria it is 75,300 NGN, and in India 5,300 INR. Second-hand resale asks for more: $781 in the US and £542 in the UK, then 151,000 NGN in Nigeria and 15,900 INR in India. Mundyo puts the payback at 2 months for the first and 4 months for the second.

AI subtitles and transcription: the best number, with a catch

AI subtitles and transcription tops the table, and it is the number we would look at first. The work: run a recording through an AI tool, then check every name, figure and comma by ear, time the subtitles, and translate if you speak a second language. Customers are podcasters, online trainers, students, journalists and companies that record meetings.

The catch is in the risk list. Automatic tools keep getting more accurate, and per-minute prices keep falling. Your edge is the human check and the extra languages, not the draft. Poor audio will eat your hours, and some client recordings are confidential, so you need to treat them that way.

A cheap way to start: test three AI tools on the same recording, subtitle one creator's video for free, then publish a simple price per minute.

Property photos: good money, uneven months

Photos and listings for owners who rent out or sell property means bright smartphone photos, a clear listing with the price and details, posting on local sites, and answering the first questions. It is on site, so it suits you if you live somewhere with plenty of rentals.

Say you live in Manchester and spot "to let" signs on your street. You would offer two owners you know the full package for free, then use those results to pitch the next ones. That is an imagined example, not a case we have seen. The real limits: orders follow the season, some clients only want to pay once the home is let or sold, and local rules on property brokerage apply. Check them before you take any commission.

Second-hand resale: slow start, steady habit

Online resale of second-hand finds is the least glamorous and probably the most forgiving. You buy at car boot sales, house clearances and from neighbours, clean up, photograph well and sell on classified sites. Start by selling your own things to learn prices. Then pick two categories, say children's clothes and small home decor.

Be honest about the bad parts. Some items will not sell. Hunting eats hours that you may count as free but are not. Platforms take fees, parcels get damaged, and tax rules can apply if you resell regularly. In a bad month you could spend 20 hours and clear very little.

WhatsApp reselling: the cheapest door in

The lowest figures in the table belong to WhatsApp reselling with no stock, but so do the lowest start costs. In the US that is $223, and in the UK £167. Nigeria needs 75,300 NGN, and India 5,300 INR. You post products from nearby wholesalers or makers in your status every day, take an order and a deposit, buy only then, and deliver locally.

The deposit is the whole trick. The risk list is about customers who cancel, suppliers who run late and friends tired of your messages. Take money first, and sell to ten people you know before anything else. With a start this small, it is a sensible way to find out whether you like selling at all.

What changes by country

In Nigeria, online ideas reach a smaller base: World Bank data shows 41% of people use the internet. Inflation was 23.0% in 2025, so a naira figure from today can age fast. Mundyo's Nigeria page lists more ideas, and the India page does the same. For the US and UK, the money is higher but so are the competing freelancers, which is why the on-site ideas deserve a look.

One more we would skip at 20 hours: ready-made document templates. In the US the estimate is $1,230 to start for $1,000 a month at month 12, with payback in 6 months. That is slow compared with the others above.

If you can only give 20 hours, give them to one idea for a full 12 months. Switching every six weeks is the surest way to never reach the numbers in the table.

Check the licence and tax rules where you live before you charge anyone. Mundyo estimates are not promises, and your first months will be below them.
